Dartmoor Zoo

The drive from Plymouth takes you inland towards higher ground where Dartmoor Zoo sits on the edge of the moor itself. You're walking around enclosures watching big cats, primates and various birds - nothing revolutionary, but it's done decently enough and the moorland setting gives it character other zoos lack.

The animals are the main event. You'll see tigers, leopards, monkeys and owls in fairly spacious enclosures. It's the sort of place where kids will spend a solid two to three hours before getting restless, though older children and adults keen on wildlife won't overstay. The moorland backdrop actually makes a difference - you're not hemmed in by urban sprawl like some attractions. Walking between enclosures you get genuine views across Devon.

Bring layers. The moor catches wind something fierce and even in summer it can feel fresh up there. Allow a full afternoon if you've got young kids, but don't expect to spend all day here unless you're really into zoos. It works as a half-day activity, which fits nicely with staying at either Dartmoor Domes or Hidden Hill Devon luxury Glamping - both within striking distance. You could easily pair this with a walk on the actual moor itself, which honestly offers more for adults than the zoo.

Worth the trip if you've got children aged five to twelve. Beyond that age group it depends entirely on how keen they are on wildlife. Families staying at nearby glamping sites will find it convenient enough, though the moor itself is probably the greater draw.
