Dean Burn Waterfall

Water tumbles down a narrow rocky channel, creating one of the Scottish Borders' more dramatic little falls. Dean Burn Waterfall isn't a massive drop - don't expect Niagara - but it's got real character, especially after heavy rain when the burn runs properly full. The setting is what makes it: a steep-sided wooded glen that feels properly wild even though you're only minutes from Hawick.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a five-minute tourist snap and done situation. The burn itself is lovely to follow, with pools and smaller cascades on the approach, and the gorge has that enclosed, slightly moody atmosphere that makes Scottish glens so rewarding. Allow a good hour if you want to poke about properly and take photographs without rushing. Worth timing your visit after rain - the falls are a rather modest affair in dry weather.

Geographically it slots perfectly into a long Borders walk or as a natural stop-off if you're exploring the hills around Hawick. Pair it with a stay at Stouslie Snugs, the luxury farm glamping just 1.4 miles away, and you've got access to proper outdoor bits without sacrificing comfort. The path can be boggy underfoot so decent boots are essential, not optional. Not for young kids unless they're confident on slopes and happy getting a bit muddy. It's free and you'll want to spend longer here than you'd expect for something this easy to reach.
