Wilton Lodge Park

The Tweed flows right through Wilton Lodge Park, and that alone makes it worth the detour from Hawick town centre. It's a proper riverside walk rather than a manicured gardens affair - there are trees, open grassland, and enough paths to keep you occupied for a solid hour or two without feeling rushed.

You get the full Scottish Borders experience here. The river's the main draw, genuinely lovely when the light hits it right, especially in late afternoon. There are benches dotted about if you want to sit and watch the water for a bit. History types will appreciate that this sits in walking distance of one of the Borders' textile towns - Hawick's weaving heritage is everywhere if you know where to look.

It's free to wander, which is brilliant. No time limit either, though realistically most people do an hour's loop. Families with young kids will manage fine on the main paths, though it's not a playground or anything structured - it's just a nice green space with a river running through it.

If you're staying at the likes of Stouslie Snugs just down the road, this is an easy morning outing before heading into town. Spring and autumn are best - summer can get a bit muggy, and winter's fine if you don't mind the damp. The park does exactly what it says: lets you breathe, stretch your legs, and remember why Scottish rivers are worth looking at.
