Dean Wood

Dean Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Wallingford, the sort of place that rewards you with quiet - no crowds, no fuss, just trees and the occasional rustling of something unseen in the undergrowth. The forest floor is thick with leaf matter, and depending on the season you'll find bluebells smothering the ground or late-summer shade that's genuinely cool on a hot day.

It's straightforward woodland rambling rather than anything flashy. Paths wind through mixed deciduous and coniferous growth, with enough variety in the walk to keep you engaged for a decent hour or two if you're that way inclined. The terrain is fairly forgiving - nothing steep or treacherous - which makes it workable for families with older kids or anyone after a gentle stretch of the legs rather than a proper hike.

Wallingford sits close by if you need town facilities, and the wider area is well-stocked with holiday parks. Ridgeway View and Rolling Fields are both within spitting distance at 3.2 miles, while Bridge Villa and The Chilterns View offer slightly roomier options a bit further out. Benson Waterfront, just under six miles away, gives you waterside camping if that appeals.

Go mid-week if you can - you'll have the place almost to yourself. Autumn's probably the best shout, when the light filters through more interestingly and the woodland feels properly alive. It won't set your heart racing, but that's rather the point.
