Poors Shaw

Poors Shaw is a proper woodland walk just outside Wallingford, the sort of place that rewards you for getting off the main roads but doesn't demand much in return. It's ancient forest - the kind where you can actually feel the age of the place, with gnarled oaks and thick undergrowth that makes you realise why medieval folk found woods slightly unsettling.

You're looking at a straightforward ramble through mixed woodland, good for families who want the forest experience without needing specialist kit or a full day. The paths are manageable if a bit muddy after rain, and it's the sort of walk where you might spot deer or at least evidence they've been about. It takes a solid hour or so to explore properly, though you can do it in half that if you're just after fresh air and a leg-stretch.

Historically minded types will appreciate that this woodland has been here for centuries - it's proper old England in a small package. Kids get bored easily in forests without a stream or clearing to play in, so manage expectations there.

If you're based at Ridgeway View Campsite or Bridge Villa, this is your immediate neighbourhood - both are within a couple of miles, making it ideal for a morning walk before breakfast or an evening wander when the light's soft. Free to access, no facilities to speak of, and worth combining with a proper walk along the Thames Path towards Wallingford itself. Go when the weather's been dry enough to make the paths pleasant rather than treacherous.
