Denmans Garden

Four acres of proper garden design that actually makes you think about how plants work together rather than just look nice. Denmans, just outside Arundel, was created by Joyce Stewart in the 1940s and has evolved into something genuinely instructive - it's more about composition and structure than your typical herbaceous border.

You'll walk through gravel gardens, shaded woodland areas, and carefully planted beds where every plant seems to have a reason for being there. The design philosophy is refreshingly unsentimental. Rather than cramming in everything under the sun, there's real restraint, which honestly makes it more restful than places bursting with colour.

This appeals most to keen gardeners and design enthusiasts rather than families after a casual stroll. You'll want two hours minimum to actually absorb what's happening, maybe longer if you're the type who photographs plant combinations for later reference. There's a plant nursery on site and a cafe, which helps break up a longer visit.

Check their website for admission fees and opening times before you go - they're not always obvious. If you're camping at South Downs Caravan Park nearby, Denmans makes a good half-day outing, especially if you're genuinely interested in garden structure. It's worth the drive from Littlehampton or Chichester too, though less essential if you're just after a quick botanical wander. Come spring or early summer when the bones of the garden really show themselves.
