Deuchie Wood

Walk into Deuchie Wood near Dunbar and you're immediately swallowed by proper dense woodland - the kind where light filters through the canopy in pale yellow streaks. It's a genuine forest walk, not a manicured park trail, with paths that wind through mature trees and plenty of undergrowth to make you feel like you're actually somewhere.

The wood itself is straightforward: you go in, you walk about, you come back out. No visitor centre, no facilities, no faffing about. It's best suited to walkers who want fresh air and a bit of solitude rather than families after a theme park experience. The paths are decent enough but can be muddy after rain, so proper boots matter. You could easily spend an hour here, two if you're the type who stops to look at birds.

Timing-wise, spring and early autumn are your best bets - fewer midges, better light for spotting wildlife. It's free, which is always a win.

If you're staying at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park just down the road, Deuchie Wood makes a solid stretch-your-legs stop without being a full day commitment. It's the kind of place that works best if you're already in East Lothian exploring rather than a specific reason to drive out to Dunbar. Pleasant enough, but don't overstate it in your head beforehand.
