Devils Truck

Scrambling up rough limestone cliffs on the Gower Peninsula, you'll find this dramatic rocky outcrop that locals call Devils Truck - though quite why remains a mystery. The limestone formation juts out from the clifftop like a giant's abandoned vehicle, offering proper dramatic views across Swansea Bay and the Bristol Channel beyond.

Getting there requires a decent walk from the nearest car park, and the final scramble isn't for anyone worried about their ankles. But the payoff is worth it - on a clear day you can see right across to Devon, with Swansea's industrial coastline spread out below like a fascinating patchwork of docks, steelworks and suburban sprawl.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from this spot, though families with older children who don't mind a bit of rough terrain will find it rewarding too. Allow at least two hours for the round trip from any of the nearby holiday parks like Gower Holiday Village or Bank Farm Leisure - all within easy driving distance of this corner of the Gower.

Early morning or late afternoon light works best for photos, and you'll want to check the weather forecast before setting off. The exposed position means it can be properly windy up there, even when it's calm at sea level.
