Walk into Diamond Hill Plantation and you're immediately surrounded by dense woodland that feels properly isolated, even though you're just outside Richmond. The forest is thick - conifers mostly, with a network of paths that wind through the trees without too much fanfare or visitor infrastructure, which is honestly refreshing.

It's a straight-forward woodland walk rather than a themed attraction. You get forest air, birdsong, and the soft crunch of needles underfoot. The plantation isn't vast, so you can cover the main paths in 45 minutes to an hour without rushing. There are no dramatic viewpoints or notable landmarks within the forest itself, which means it works best for people who simply want trees and quiet rather than those chasing a destination or a photo opportunity.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour - it's all woodland, no variation. But if you're staying at Hewn Yorkshire, just 3.3 miles away, and you want to stretch your legs without a long drive, it does the job. The paths aren't particularly challenging, though they can get muddy depending on weather.
