Diffwys West Top

The walk up Diffwys West Top isn't complicated, but it does require actual effort - this isn't a stroll you squeeze in between breakfast and lunch. The peak sits above Dolgellau in Gwynedd, part of the bigger fell system that draws walkers year-round, and once you're up there the views across the Mawddach estuary and towards Cadair Idris are genuinely impressive.

It's a proper hill walker's destination rather than a casual family outing. You're looking at a decent hike with real climbing involved - bring decent boots and check the weather because cloud cover here can arrive fast and thick. Allow two to three hours depending on fitness and which route you take from the valley.

Histor enthusiasts won't find much interpretation on the hill itself, but the landscape tells its own story - this is slate mining country, and the industrial archaeology scattered across these fells is fascinating if you know where to look. The real appeal is the walking itself and the views rather than facilities or amenities.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Graig Wen is closest at 4.4 miles, Shell Island makes a decent seaside alternative - Diffwys West Top works brilliantly as a half-day adventure. The weather in North Wales being what it is, spring or autumn mornings offer the clearest visibility. Waterproof trousers aren't optional.
