Dilly Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Dilly Wood sits just outside Hertford and delivers exactly what you'd want from a Hertfordshire forest - shaded paths, a bit of peace, and enough room to stretch your legs without needing an ordnance survey map.

The wood is small enough that you won't get lost, large enough that an hour passes quickly. Locals come here for dog walks and quick afternoon breaks, which tells you everything about its appeal. The paths are well-trodden, the light filters through the canopy nicely, and in autumn the leaf coverage is excellent. It's the sort of place where kids can run ahead without you losing sight of them entirely.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no car park, café, or facilities - so go in expecting a straightforward woodland experience. Free admission, naturally, and you can be in and out in 45 minutes if you've got limited time, or linger for two hours if you're the contemplative type.

Dilly Wood works well as a morning outing if you're based at Church Farm Ardeley just up the road. It won't blow your mind, but it's the sort of reliable green space that makes a park holiday feel properly grounded rather than constantly chasing attractions. Hertford itself has more going on if you need to fill an afternoon, but this scratches that woodland itch without any fuss.
