Dinton Recreation Ground

A strip of grassland and woodland that sits just outside Salisbury, Dinton Recreation Ground does exactly what it says on the tin - it's a proper local spot rather than a destination attraction. The ground itself is fairly modest: open meadows with tree lines, some footpaths threading through, and enough space to let a dog off the lead without worrying too much.

Walkers will find it useful for a quick leg-stretch, especially if you're staying at Marshwood Farm Camping nearby (less than a mile away) and fancy something green without driving anywhere. The woodland sections offer a bit of shade, and it's the sort of place where you might actually see a woodpecker or hear the odd owl in the quieter bits. Kids won't be blown away by facilities - there's no play equipment or café - but they'll have room to run around, which counts for something.

The real appeal sits in what it isn't: it's not touristy, not crowded, and it won't demand more than an hour of your time. Good for breaking up a Salisbury visit, or as an easy morning walk if you're based at Chalke Valley Camping five miles south. It's free access and there are no formal opening hours listed, so you can potter about pretty much whenever suits you.

If you want something with more personality, Salisbury itself is close enough for the cathedral visit. But Dinton? It's the kind of place that's worth knowing about if you need a bit of fresh air and nothing more complicated than that.
