Ditcham Woods.

The woodland around Ditcham, just outside Petersfield, is proper walking territory. Ancient beech and oak dominate the canopy, with the sort of dappled light that makes you forget about your phone for an hour or two. Paths wind through without being overcrowded or signposted to death, which is either brilliant or frustrating depending on whether you've brought a map.

It's the kind of place walkers genuinely enjoy. No admission fee to speak of, no visitor centre selling overpriced coffee, just trees and the odd stream. You're looking at anything from a quick 45-minute ramble to a proper half-day walk if you explore properly. Spring brings bluebells; autumn is golden. Winter can be muddy but rarely impassable.

Families with young children might find it a bit much after an hour unless they're into climbing over logs and spotting wildlife. Older kids who can manage three miles and don't need constant entertainment will have a decent time. Dog walkers absolutely love it here.

If you're based at Bow Hill Farm or Cedar Valley - both solid caravan options within five miles - you could easily build a morning or afternoon around Ditcham. It's the sort of local wood that feels properly Hampshire without being a tourist trap. Worth the detour if you're hiking in the area, but don't expect viewpoints or dramatic vistas. This is about the walk itself.
