The woodland here is thick and proper dark in places - the kind of forest where light filters through in shafts and you can actually hear yourself think. Dog Kennel Plantation sits just outside Chippenham, a stretch of mixed woodland that's ideal if you want a straightforward walk without the crowds. There's nothing fancy about it. No visitor centre, no marked trails with interpretation boards, just trees and the occasional path where locals have worn the ground smooth.

You'll find it best suited to walkers after a bit of quiet time and families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground without constant entertainment. An hour is usually plenty, maybe ninety minutes if you potter. The woodland's decent for spotting birds, and there's enough space to let dogs do their thing properly - which, given the name, seems rather the point.

It's free to access, though facilities are minimal. Go on a weekday morning if you want solitude; weekends pull in the local dog-walking brigade. The plantation works well as part of a broader Wiltshire walking loop, especially if you're based at Plough Lane Caravan Site or The Moors Campsite just down the road. It's not a day trip on its own, but as a morning stretch before heading elsewhere, it does the job.
