Dogdyke Pumping Station

The Victorian steam engine that sits at Dogdyke Pumping Station is the real draw here. Built in 1855, it was installed to pump water from the Fenland drainage system - hardly the stuff of school trip legend, but stick with it. The engine itself is a proper piece of engineering: all cast iron and working parts, the kind of thing that makes sense once someone explains what it actually did. You walk around the station, see the machinery in situ, and get a feel for how the Fens were wrestled into submission by sheer mechanical ingenuity. There's not much interpretation beyond the obvious, so history buffs and anyone keen on industrial archaeology will find it more rewarding than casual visitors. Kids under ten might find it dull after twenty minutes unless they're already fascinated by how things work. Allow an hour maximum. It's free to visit, which takes the sting out of the drive from Lincoln - about fifteen miles north. The station sits in fairly flat, empty countryside, so there's a bit of walk-around-the-car-park feel to it, but that's the Fens for you. If you're staying at Tattershall Lakes Country Park, just down the road, it's worth a quick detour on a wet afternoon. Pair it with Tattershall Castle, which is actually interesting, and you've got yourself a proper Fenland morning. The pumping station works best as a five-minute stop rather than a destination in itself.
