Medieval cathedral spires pierce the sky above a city that sprawls across a limestone ridge, with Roman origins still etched into its street plan. Lincoln's got proper character - part ancient fortress, part university town, with cobbled streets that'll test your ankles and views that stretch across the Lincolnshire Wolds for miles.

The cathedral dominates everything. Towering over Steep Hill, it's been drawing pilgrims and tourists for nearly a thousand years, and rightly so. Below it, the old town tumbles down towards Brayford Pool, where narrow boats bob alongside waterside pubs. It's a bit of a trek up from the modern shopping areas, but well worth it for the medieval atmosphere.

Beyond the city limits, the countryside opens up into something quite special. Head east towards Bardney and you'll find quieter pleasures - St Lawrence Church sits in peaceful village surroundings, while the RAF Metheringham Memorial offers a poignant reminder of wartime Lincolnshire. For something completely different, Chambers Farm Wood Butterfly Garden provides a lovely afternoon out, especially with children.

Getting here couldn't be easier. Lincoln sits bang on the A46, with decent rail connections to London and the north. The surrounding villages like Bardney and Southrey are perfect for exploring by car, with their mix of ancient churches, war memorials, and surprisingly good local breweries like Ferry Ales.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough for easy cathedral visits but far enough out to enjoy proper countryside peace. Places like Hartsholme Country Park campsite put you right in green space, while Woodhall Country Park offers easy access to the Lincolnshire Wolds. After a day climbing Steep Hill and dodging tourists, returning to rural quiet feels just right.
