Dollar Glen

A proper woodland walk through a narrow ravine just outside Dollar - this is the kind of place that rewards you for leaving the car park. The glen itself is dramatic in a quiet way: steep wooded sides, a burn running below, and Castle Campbell perched on the hilltop above like it owns the whole valley. You're walking alongside the water for much of it, which keeps things interesting even if the path gets a bit muddy.

It's free, which is brilliant, and the whole thing takes about an hour if you go at a reasonable pace and don't stop every five minutes to check your phone. The walk works equally well for families wanting something low-key and for anyone who enjoys a decent stretch through proper woodland. On a grey Scottish day - which is most days, honestly - the place has real atmosphere.

The main draw is the climb up to Castle Campbell itself at the top. It's worth the leg work, though fair warning: it's genuinely steep at points and can feel exposed when the wind picks up. Kids will either love it or complain bitterly. If you're staying at Fossoway Cabins or Meadow View Glamping nearby, this makes an excellent half-day outing. It's the sort of spot that feels like you've discovered something, even though plenty of locals use it regularly. Go in autumn when the light's better and the crowds have thinned out.
