Dorset Knapp

The walk up to Dorset Knapp rewards you with one of those proper Dorset views that makes you understand why people bang on about the county's chalk downs. It's a modest hill by any measure - nothing that'll leave you gasping - but the vantage point across the countryside around Waddon justifies the scramble up.

You're looking at a Bronze Age tumulus, essentially a ceremonial burial mound that's been sitting here for thousands of years. The actual summit is fairly understated; there's no visitor infrastructure, no interpretation boards, just you and the wind and whatever ghosts of ancient Dorset you fancy imagining. Archaeology types will find it interesting enough, though walkers care more about the walk itself than the destination.

Allow 45 minutes to an hour including the climb, depending on fitness. There's no admission charge because there's nothing formal here - just access across farmland and open ground. Spring and early summer are nicest; winter can turn the approach muddy and grim.

If you're staying at Litton Lakes just four miles away, this slots neatly into a morning walk before heading back for lunch. The nearby park is well-positioned for exploring this corner of Dorset, and Dorset Knapp makes a decent waypoint on a longer ramble rather than a standalone trip. Worth the effort if you're already in the area, but don't make a special journey unless you're properly into Bronze Age archaeology or local landscape history.
