Double Waters

The confluence point where the East and West Tavy rivers meet creates something genuinely striking - two distinct bodies of water colliding before they merge into one. It's the kind of natural phenomenon that stops you mid-walk, makes you pull out your phone, and keeps you standing there longer than you'd planned.

Double Waters sits just outside Tavistock in the heart of Dartmoor country, and it's fundamentally a walker's thing. The approach takes you through proper Devon moorland terrain, and the payoff is this clear visual demonstration of hydrology in action. Depending on recent rainfall, the waters can be quite dramatically different colours where they meet - one often noticeably darker than the other. Photographers and nature types will find it worthwhile; young children might need a bit of coaxing to understand why standing at a river junction is actually interesting.

There's no visitor infrastructure here - no cafe, no car park, no admission fee. It's just the landscape doing its thing. Allow twenty minutes to half an hour if you're coming from Tavistock town centre, depending on your pace and where you park. Spring and autumn visits are probably best when water levels are higher and the visual contrast more dramatic.

The beauty of Double Waters is how it slots into a broader Dartmoor walking holiday. Langstone Manor and Woodovis both sit within four miles, making them natural bases. You can string together several riverside and moorland walks from either, rather than making Double Waters a standalone trip. It's part of the landscape, not a destination unto itself.
