Dovestone Greenfield

The Dovestone Reservoir sits in a proper dramatic stretch of the Pennines, just outside Greenfield. You've got water on three sides hemmed in by moorland that rises steep and fast - it's the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people walk up here, again and again.

The main draw is the three-mile circuit around the water. It's straightforward enough for families, though the path does get muddy after rain and there's a fair bit of elevation if you fancy the higher sections. The view from the far end, looking back towards the dam, is worth the walk. On a clear day you can see right across the valley.

Historically, this was built in the 1950s as part of the water infrastructure push - practical rather than romantic, but that industrial heritage adds something when you're standing there. The reservoir's become a genuine focal point for the valley, drawing walkers, photographers, and anyone who wants to escape into the hills without driving far.

It's free to visit and you can turn up whenever suits you. Allow two to three hours for the full circuit, or an hour if you just want the easier sections near the dam. Winter can be bleak, so spring through autumn is better for the experience.
