Down Plantation

Walking into Down Plantation feels like stepping into someone's private woodland - which, frankly, it almost is. This small forest sits just outside Stroud and does exactly what a proper Wiltshire wood should do: offers shelter from the wind, decent tree cover, and enough meandering paths to keep you occupied for an hour or so without feeling like you've trudged miles.

It's really a walker's spot rather than a destination in itself. The paths are gentle enough for families with younger legs, though the ground can get properly muddy after rain. You won't find riverside views or dramatic vistas - this is intimate woodland stuff. Oak and beech mostly, with the kind of undergrowth that makes you feel like you've actually escaped rather than just nipped to the local park. There's a pleasing quiet to it, which counts for something when you're camped at Burton Hill just down the road.

If you're staying at Burton Hill Caravan & Camping Park or the glamping setup at Whychurch Farm, Down Plantation works as a decent morning walk before heading into Stroud proper. It's close enough for a quick leg-stretch without needing to pack a full rucksack. Don't expect facilities - there's nowhere to grab a coffee or buy an ice cream. This is a walk-in, walk-out sort of place.

Give it forty minutes to an hour. It's free, naturally. Go when the ground's dry if you can, because the paths get slippery otherwise. Kids won't find it boring if they like looking for woodland creatures, but they might if screens are their preference.
