Downeri

The walk up Downeri from Dunfermline is one of those straightforward Fife outings that rewards you without demanding too much. It's not a proper mountain - more a solid hill that gives you proper views across the region without taking all day. The summit itself is modest, but the walk in gets you away from town quickly, which matters when you're camped at one of the sites like Gallowhill or Greenhill Farm just a few miles out.

Really, this is for walkers who want something genuine but manageable. An hour or so up, half that coming down, and you're done before lunch. Families with kids aged eight-plus will find it doable; younger ones might flag. The terrain is fairly straightforward - nothing technical, just proper ground underfoot. Go in decent weather though. Midges and drizzle take the shine off it fast.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared with water and a map. Free to walk, obviously. The nearest towns are Dunfermline itself and if you're staying at Fossoway Cabins or Maycroft Retreat further out, you're within reasonable reach as a half-day excursion.

It's the sort of walk that fits perfectly into a week at the caravan parks - enough to keep active types happy without demanding you dedicate your whole holiday. Worth it for the leg-stretch and the air, but don't expect drama.
