But climb beyond the historic centre and you'll discover a landscape peppered with hills that offer cracking views across central Scotland. Braughty Hill and Cairn Hill provide gentle walks with rewards, while Black Loch sits quietly in the countryside, perfect for those wanting a bit of peace.

The surrounding area feels surprisingly wild for somewhere so close to Edinburgh. Easter Cairn and Craigluscar Hill rise from farmland, their summits offering glimpses of the Forth bridges on clear days. It's proper walking country - not dramatic Highland stuff, but rolling terrain that rewards those who venture beyond the A90.

Getting here couldn't be easier. Dunfermline sits just off the M90, making it a doddle from Edinburgh or Glasgow. The train from Edinburgh takes forty minutes, dropping you right in the town centre. From here, those hills are all within striking distance on foot or by car.

Staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around gives you the best of both worlds. You're close enough to nip into town for supplies or a proper meal, but far enough out to wake up to countryside views. The Wellwood-Moncreiff Monument and various peaks make for excellent day walks from most of the nearby sites, while Dunfermline itself provides all the amenities you'd expect from Scotland's ancient capital.
