Drambog Plantation

Drive inland from Kirkcudbright and you'll find yourself in Drambog Plantation, a proper working forest that feels a world away from the coastal towns nearby. It's not a manicured visitor attraction with information boards at every turn - this is genuine Scottish woodland where you can actually walk without bumping into tour groups.

The plantation itself is mix of conifers and broadleaf trees, decent enough for a couple of hours of wandering if you're based at Brighouse Bay Holiday Park or staying in the area. Paths wind through at a gentle pace, though they can get boggy after rain, so decent boots are worth bringing. The woodland does have that slightly austere quality you get from managed forestry - not wild, but quiet and good for clearing your head.

It's best suited to walkers wanting a break from the coast rather than families expecting adventure playgrounds or riverside views. You won't find facilities or proper car parks, so turn up expecting a basic forest walk and you'll leave content. Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on how many paths you fancy exploring.
