Drostre Wood Nature Reserve

The woodland paths at Drostre Wood feel properly remote despite being just outside Brecon. You're walking through thick deciduous forest - the kind where the canopy closes overhead and you lose track of time. Ancient oaks dominate the reserve, with moss-covered trunks and a floor that's soft underfoot most of the year.

It's the sort of place where walkers get genuine value. The paths are manageable rather than punishing, and you could spend anything from an hour wandering the immediate vicinity to a full afternoon if you're inclined to explore further. Birdwatchers seem to know this place well - there's proper wildlife here, not just the obvious stuff. Children won't get bored if they're into the outdoors, though there's nothing manufactured or packaged about it.

Brecon sits within striking distance if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Pencelli Castle is closest at 3.5 miles, or Woodland Park Glamping just 2.9 miles away. The reserve works well as a morning walk before heading into town proper, or as a quiet interlude between days at larger attractions in the Brecon Beacons.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is honestly part of the appeal. Free access, as far as anyone can tell. Go when the weather's decent - the canopy protection helps in light rain, but heavy downpours turn the paths into proper bogs. Autumn's probably the best bet, when the light filters through differently and the place feels even more atmospheric.
