Brecon

Medieval stone walls still ring the heart of this Welsh market town, though the bustling cattle markets that once defined it have long gone. Brecon sits at the foot of the Beacons proper, where the River Usk cuts through green valleys that feel surprisingly wild given you're barely an hour from Cardiff.

The town itself is proper Welsh - all grey stone terraces and narrow streets that haven't changed much since drovers herded cattle through centuries ago. Saint Michael's church dominates the skyline, while the Cambrian Cruisers Marina down by the canal offers a gentler way to see the countryside if your legs aren't up to tackling Pen-y-commin or the other peaks that loom above town.

Climbing any of the surrounding summits - Pentwyn, Drostre Bank, or Twyn Llechfaen - rewards you with views that stretch across three counties on a clear day. The forests of Coed Rwl and Pistyll Wood provide easier walking if the peaks seem a bit much, though honestly the hills here aren't too demanding.

Getting here is straightforward enough. The A470 runs straight through from Cardiff, while trains from Swansea stop at nearby Merthyr. Most folk use Brecon as a base for exploring the national park rather than lingering in town itself, which makes sense given what's on the doorstep.

Staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around the area puts you right in the thick of walking country. Great House Farm offers luxury pods if you fancy a bit more comfort, while traditional sites like Pencelli Castle give you that proper camping experience. Either way, you'll wake up with the Beacons literally outside your tent flap.
