Drum Castle, Garden & Estate (National Trust for Scotland)

The first thing that strikes you about Drum Castle is how genuine it feels - no Disney-fication, just a proper medieval fortress that's been lived in for nearly 700 years. It's a working castle, not a museum piece, and you can sense that the moment you walk through the entrance near Drumoak.

The castle itself is the main draw: a 13th-century keep surrounded by later additions that tell the story of Scottish domestic architecture. Inside, you'll find period furniture, family portraits, and enough character to keep history enthusiasts properly engaged for a couple of hours. The grounds are equally worthwhile - the gardens are well-maintained without feeling overly formal, and there's genuine woodland to explore if you've got the legs for it.

Families with older kids will find plenty to occupy them, though younger ones might tire once they've done the castle rooms. It's the kind of place where a decent walk around the estate matters as much as the building itself. Allow three to four hours if you're doing it properly.

If you're staying at Deeside Holiday Park or Silverbank, Drum works as an easy afternoon outing. It complements the wider Deeside corridor well - you're in proper Cairngorms country here, so combining it with a woodland walk or a visit to the River Dee makes sense.
