Drum Castle Walled Garden

The walled garden at Drum Castle is one of those places that sneaks up on you. You're wandering through Aberdeenshire, probably heading towards Upper Anguston, and suddenly there's this proper Victorian garden tucked behind stone walls - about 5.8 miles from Silverbank Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite if you're based that way.

Inside, it's all formal beds and heritage plantings, the kind of garden where you can actually see what someone was trying to do centuries ago. The walls keep things sheltered, so things grow properly here even in the Scottish Highlands. There's a real sense of order to it - geometric layouts, seasonal flowers, vegetable patches that remind you this was once a working space feeding a castle household.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this. Kids might manage twenty minutes before the rows of plants lose their appeal, though there's something satisfying about the symmetry that can hold their attention longer than you'd expect. It's not a sprawling adventure space - more contemplative than that.

You could easily combine it with exploring the castle grounds themselves if they're open, or use it as a gentle morning stop before heading to other Highland attractions. Allow an hour to really look around without rushing. The best time is late spring through summer when everything's in flower - visiting in February would feel a bit spare.
