Drums Ddu

Getting up to Drums Ddu means a proper walk from Llandrindod Wells, but the ridge views across Mid Wales make it worth the leg-work. It's a modest peak rather than dramatic, the sort of hill that rewards you for the effort without exhausting you completely. Once you're up there the landscape opens out - you get that sense of being genuinely away from things, which Powys does rather well. The walk itself takes you through moorland that changes with the season. Spring feels bright and new up here; autumn turns it bronze and melancholy. Allow a good few hours if you're starting from the town and not rushing. This is walker territory, really. Families with older children would manage it fine, but it's not a quick stroll for toddlers. The peak itself is free - there's no gate or entrance fee to hassle with. Weather matters more than usual when you're this exposed, so check the forecast before heading out. If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - The Pines is closest at just two miles out - Drums Ddu makes an excellent half-day escape without needing to trek too far. It's exactly the sort of mid-range peak that justifies a week in this part of Wales without being so famous you'll fight crowds on a decent weekend. Real hill-walking country, not Instagram country.
