Duke Street Church, Richmond

The cream and red brick facade of Duke Street Church sits just off Richmond's main drag, a proper Victorian chapel that's easy to walk straight past if you're not paying attention. Built in the 1860s, it's a Methodist place of worship that's somehow managed to stay largely under the radar despite sitting in one of Surrey's smartest postcodes.

Inside, the woodwork is exceptional - dark timber pews and a coffered ceiling that catches the light beautifully if you visit on a sunny afternoon. It's got that particular Victorian chapel feeling: intimate without being claustrophobic, ornate without tipping into theatrical. The stained glass is decent rather than showstopping, but the overall proportions feel just right.

This isn't a major ticketed attraction. You can usually pop in during service times or by arrangement, which means it's genuinely free and without the orchestrated tourism that kills so many historic churches. It works best if you're already in Richmond exploring - the town centre is walkable from here and the riverside path towards Kew is close by.

Families with older children who appreciate Victorian architecture will get something from it; younger kids might find twenty minutes is enough. History buffs will appreciate the craftsmanship, but don't expect elaborate documentation or guided tours.
