Dunbar Battery

The battery sits on a rocky headland just outside Dunbar, commanding views over the Firth of Forth that'll take your breath away on a clear day. It's a proper vantage point - the kind of place where you can actually understand why someone thought it worth defending.

This is a fortification, so you're looking at sturdy stone walls and gun emplacements built to protect against naval invasion. Walk the perimeter and you'll get a sense of 18th and 19th century coastal defences without needing to know all the technical bits. The structure itself is substantial enough to spend twenty minutes poking around, though it's not a massive complex that'll keep you for hours.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate the strategic position, but families with younger kids should manage fine - there's something satisfying about clambering on old fortifications, and the coastal path around it offers decent walking with proper views. The battery works brilliantly as a half-hour stop if you're base camping at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park, which sits just a mile or so down the coast.

Access appears straightforward - it's right there on the landscape above Dunbar - though I'd check locally for any seasonal access issues. Bring a camera. The light on the Firth, especially in late afternoon, makes the whole thing worth the detour. Not a destination trip in itself, but well worth combining with a coastal walk and the nearby town.
