Dundee Degree Show

Every June, the University of Dundee transforms its graduate studios into a sprawling open house where you can actually talk to the people who made the work. The Degree Show pulls together final-year students across art, design, illustration and architecture - and it's properly eye-opening stuff. You'll wander through exhibition spaces seeing everything from experimental installations to graphic design portfolios, jewellery, fine art prints, and architectural models that genuinely push boundaries.

What makes it different from a commercial gallery is the immediacy of it. Artists are often on hand to explain their process, answer questions, and show you the thinking behind pieces. Some work is for sale, which means you can actually buy something from someone on the cusp of their career. It's less polished than a proper gallery, but that's exactly the point - there's an energy here that feels raw and genuine.

Walking distance from Tayport, this works brilliantly if you're staying at Tayport Links or Larick - neither is far enough away to need a second drive. Allow three to four hours minimum, more if you get chatting. Go early in the show rather than towards the end, as popular pieces shift quickly. It's brilliant for anyone genuinely interested in contemporary art, design students scouting for inspiration, or parents who want to see what their creative offspring has been working towards. If you're after a leisurely park holiday with cultural depth, it's the kind of thing that lifts a week from pleasant to actually memorable.
