Railway carriages once rumbled across the Tay Rail Bridge straight into this former fishing port, but these days Tayport feels quietly content with its riverside perch. The town sits where the River Tay meets the North Sea, with decent views across to Broughty Ferry and Dundee's skyline beyond.

Dundee Law dominates the southern horizon - that distinctive volcanic plug rising from the city centre makes for a proper landmark when you're getting your bearings. The ferry connection that once made Tayport a crucial transport hub is long gone, but the harbour still sees plenty of small boats and the occasional seal.

Walking the coastal path eastward takes you past some lovely stretches of sand and dune, while the town itself has a pleasant, lived-in feel without being overly polished for tourists. The high street can feel a bit sleepy midweek, but there's enough here for a proper wander.

Getting here from Edinburgh takes about an hour and a half by car, crossing the famous Tay Road Bridge. Dundee sits just eight miles southwest if you need proper shopping or the cultural offerings at Dundee Contemporary Arts.
