Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries

Andrew Carnegie's birthplace gave Scotland this rather grand Victorian library, and it's still standing proud on the high street in Dunfermline. The building itself - all red sandstone and ornate detailing - catches your eye before you've even stepped through the doors. Inside, you'll find proper art galleries alongside the library proper, with rotating exhibitions that range from local history to contemporary work.

The real draw here is the Carnegie connection. He built the thing to give working folk access to books and culture, which feels quite radical when you think about it now. The galleries are small but genuinely interesting - I spent longer than expected looking at photographs and artworks that actually had something to say. The building has that Victorian solidity about it, all high ceilings and natural light flooding through tall windows.

It's free to wander round, which is brilliant. You won't need more than an hour unless there's a specific exhibition on that grabs you. Families with older kids will get more out of it than those with toddlers, and anyone interested in Scottish industrial history will find it worthwhile.

Pop into Dunfermline high street for lunch or a browse round the shops, then head up to the library. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's absolutely worth the short detour if you're in the area.
