Ancient stones and royal history dominate this former Scottish capital where medieval abbeys cast long shadows over modern streets. Dunfermline carries the weight of centuries - Robert the Bruce lies buried in the abbey ruins, while Carnegie's legacy lives on through his birthplace museum and the libraries he funded worldwide.

The town centre feels properly lived-in rather than polished for tourists. Locals queue for proper fish suppers while schoolkids dawdle past the ornate Carnegie Hall. You'll find decent pubs tucked between charity shops, and the weekly market still draws folk from surrounding villages.

Beyond the abbey precinct, Pittencrieff Park sprawls across 76 acres of wooded valleys and formal gardens - Carnegie's gift to his hometown. Kids feed ducks while dog walkers navigate the network of paths that wind past peacocks and through the glen.

The surrounding countryside rolls away in gentle Fife hills. Edinburgh sits just across the Forth Bridge, making this corner of Fife surprisingly well-connected. The M90 brings you straight up from the south, while local buses link the smaller villages and coastal towns.

Staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around the area makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into Edinburgh for the day, yet far enough out to enjoy proper Scottish countryside and coast without the capital's crowds and prices.
