Dunmowes Manor

What's left of Dunmowes Manor is essentially a collection of earthworks and foundations scattered across a field just outside Cambridge. It's an Anglo-Saxon site that tells you something about how people actually lived a thousand years ago, beyond what you'd glean from a museum display. The remains aren't dramatic - no standing walls or reconstructed buildings - but if you're into archaeology or medieval history, it rewards a closer look.

You're walking across open ground where archaeologists have identified house platforms, ditches, and the layout of what was once a functioning settlement. It's the sort of place that works best if you go with some curiosity and maybe a bit of research beforehand - otherwise it's just bumpy fields. The site is free to access and there's no formal visitor infrastructure, which means you can show up whenever suits you.

Historygeeks and serious walkers will get more from it than families with young kids. It's not somewhere you'd spend hours, but if you're camping nearby at Bounds C&CC Certificated Site (less than a mile away) or any of the other sites around Cambridge, it's worth a morning ramble. Pair it with Cambridge's colleges and museums rather than treating it as a destination in itself. Spring and early summer are best - wet winter fields are dreary and muddy. Best to check locally about access before heading out, as agricultural land access can be temperamental.
