Dun's Knowe

The walk up Dun's Knowe is straightforward enough, but the views from the top make it worth the leg work. This isn't a dramatic mountain - it's a modest peak near Alnwick that rewards you with proper panoramic countryside once you reach the summit. On a clear day you can see across the Cheviots and down towards the Northumberland plain, which beats staring at your phone in a cafe.

It's ideal if you're camping at River Breamish Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road. The walk takes about an hour return, so you can fit it around breakfast without a full day's commitment. Families with kids aged eight and up will manage it fine - the path isn't technical and the ground stays relatively dry even after rain.

Go in the morning if you can. Afternoon light gets harsh and the peak attracts walkers once school runs are done. There's no facilities at the top, so bring water. Free to walk, obviously.

Truthfully, Dun's Knowe won't change your life. It's a solid local walk that gives you genuine views rather than forcing you down some overblown heritage trail. If you're based in the area for a few days, it's absolutely worth an hour of your time. Just don't expect crowds or signposting - it's the kind of place locals know and visitors stumble upon.
