Dunsburgh Wood

Walk far enough into Dunsburgh Wood and you'll forget Plymouth's just a few miles away. It's proper woodland - the sort with actual trees rather than a manicured country estate feel - and it's the kind of place where an hour disappears without you noticing.

The main draw is straightforward: woodland trails through dense cover, plenty of shade, and a genuine sense of being away from it all. Dog walkers love it. Families with younger kids find it manageable without being too demanding. The forest floor is soft underfoot, which beats tramping across hard-packed paths elsewhere.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I could track down, so come prepared. Bring water. Wear proper shoes - it gets muddy after rain. The trails aren't signposted to death, which is either refreshing or slightly annoying depending on your navigation skills.

If you're basing yourself at Dartmoor Domes just up the road, this makes a decent half-day outing. It won't blow your mind, but it'll scratch that woodland itch without eating into your whole morning. Allow a couple of hours if you're actually exploring rather than marching straight through.

Honestly? It's worth fitting in if you're in the area, but don't reroute your holiday specifically for it. The real draw here is that it's accessible, free, and surprisingly peaceful given how close Plymouth is. That's enough.
