Earlshall Castle

The moment you turn down the lane towards Earlshall, you're stepping back about five hundred years. Built in the 16th century, it's spent its life being enlarged, fortified, and lived in, which means it actually feels like a place where someone's made a home rather than a museum piece.

Inside, the castle is exactly as atmospheric as you'd hope. The main draw is the historic kitchen and the original gun room - the kind of details that make history click into place. The courtyard is worth lingering in, and if you time it right, the gardens offer proper views across Fife. Fair warning though: stairs are narrow and steep, so it's not ideal if you've got mobility issues or very small children who need carrying.
