Easby Abbey

The ruins sit on a bend of the River Swale, just south of Richmond, and they're properly atmospheric - especially if you catch them on an overcast afternoon when the light gets thin and grey. Easby Abbey was a Premonstratensian monastery founded in 1152, and what remains is enough to give you a real sense of medieval religious life without requiring an archaeology degree to understand it.

You get the chance to wander among stone arches, peer into what's left of the refectory and kitchen, and stand in the nave where monks once chanted. The gatehouse is largely intact, which helps orient you to how the place was laid out. It's a proper ruin - not a grand dramatic one like Fountains, but it rewards a proper look around. The setting matters as much as the stones themselves. The river adds something genuine to the experience, and you can follow riverside paths that make the visit feel less like a checkbox and more like an actual walk.

History enthusiasts will spend a good hour here picking through details. Families with younger kids might manage 40 minutes before the novelty wears thin - there's not much to do beyond looking and imagining. Go in spring or early autumn when the grass isn't waterlogged and the light is reasonable for photographs.

English Heritage manages the site, and admission is free. If you're basing yourself at Kiplin Country Park nearby, this sits perfectly as a morning or late-afternoon detour. Combines well with a proper wander along the Swale.
