East Weare Rifle Range

The rifle range at East Weare is one of those places that rewards curiosity more than it rewards casual visitors. Built in the 1860s to train troops in marksmanship, it sits on the Dorset coast near Weymouth as a genuine relic of Victorian military preparation - bullet holes and all.

You're essentially walking around a strip of clifftop grassland where soldiers once lined up to shoot at targets downrange. The butts and firing positions are still visible, weathered but unmistakable. It's the sort of spot that works best for history buffs and anyone interested in 19th-century military infrastructure. Kids might find it mildly interesting for twenty minutes, but there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, and no facilities to speak of.

What makes it worth the trip, frankly, is the walk itself. The coastal path here is genuinely lovely, and on a clear day you get proper views across Weymouth Bay. The site costs nothing to visit and you can wander around freely, though opening hours appear unregulated - just rock up when you fancy it.

If you're staying at Chesil Beach Lodge Park, which is only five miles away and actually gets decent reviews, East Weare works as a bracing half-hour detour on a coastal ramble. Pair it with the beach walks at Chesil itself rather than treating it as a standalone attraction. Serious military history types will get more out of it than families after a traditional seaside day out.
