Eastend Wood

Eastend Wood is a proper chunk of ancient woodland sitting just outside Dunmow, and it's the sort of place you stumble into expecting a quick fifteen-minute wander and end up spending half the afternoon. The trees here are genuinely old - sessile oaks and sweet chestnuts mixed with younger growth, which means there's real variety in what you're walking through rather than the monoculture you get in some managed forests.

What you actually do is walk. There are no visitor facilities, no café, no playground - this is just woodland as it is, which is either brilliant or disappointing depending on your mood. The paths are decent enough underfoot, though muddy after rain, and you'll find yourself looping through sections that feel properly wild even though you're only minutes from the car park. Wildlife spotting types will appreciate it - woodland birds, deer if you're lucky and quiet, the usual Essex woodland insects.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit limited after an hour or so, but teenagers and proper walkers will get proper value. It's free access and you can spend as little or as long as you want. Spring is when it comes alive with bluebells and nesting birds - genuinely worth timing a visit around that.

Perfect for a morning walk if you're staying at Dairymeade Farm Glamping just down the road, or combine it with a longer ramble through the surrounding countryside. It's not dramatic or showy, but that's rather the point.
