Eccleston Hill

You can see Eccleston Hill from Chester's medieval walls, which is precisely why it's worth the short trip north into Flintshire. It's a modest peak - nothing that'll exhaust you - but the walk up rewards you with proper views across the Dee valley and back towards the cathedral city you've just left. The climb takes maybe 20-30 minutes from the nearest parking, and it's the kind of walk that works equally well for families wanting a morning stretch or walkers after a gentle warm-up before tackling more serious terrain.

The hill itself is moorland-ish, which means it feels wilder than you'd expect given Chester's proximity. On a clear day you can pick out the Peckforton Hills to the south and the flatter Cheshire plains spreading eastward. Come in early autumn when the light's low and angled just right - the landscape looks like an old watercolour.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks near Chester - Netherwood's practically on the doorstep at under three miles away - this makes an easy half-day detour without eating into proper holiday time. Park visitors with kids will find it straightforward enough, though there's not much to "do" once you're up there beyond sitting, looking, and perhaps a picnic if you've brought one. The real appeal is the walk itself and the perspective it gives you on the wider North Wales-Chester border landscape. Worth the effort, but don't expect facilities or crowds.
