Edmund Coombe Coppice

Walking into Edmund Coombe Coppice feels like stepping back in time. This small woodland sits just outside Bridport, and it's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick loop. The trees here are genuinely old - proper ancient woodland with the kind of dense canopy that makes you feel properly removed from the world, even though you're only minutes from town.

It's primarily for walkers and nature types. If you're after a dramatic vista or a playground, you'll be disappointed. What you get instead is peace, birdsong, and the chance to actually see what the Dorset landscape looked like before it was all fields and farmland. There are paths threading through, though they're not marked like a managed nature reserve - you need to pay attention and take your time.

Allow an hour or so if you want to properly explore without rushing. There's no visitor centre, no facilities, no entry fee. It's just... there. That's rather the appeal, honestly.

It's close enough that even younger walkers won't complain about the distance, but natural enough that you'll actually feel like you've done something rather than just ticked a box.
