Efailnewydd Recreation Ground

The walk into Efailnewydd Recreation Ground takes you through proper Welsh countryside just outside Pwllheli - rolling fields, a handful of scattered farms, the kind of landscape that makes you remember why you came to Gwynedd in the first place. It's a nature reserve rather than a manicured attraction, which means you're working with what's actually here: rough grassland, scrub, and the chance to spot local birdlife if you're patient enough.

This is absolutely one for walkers and nature types rather than anyone expecting facilities or neat paths. You'll spend an hour poking about comfortably, longer if you're into identifying plants or you've brought binoculars. The ground itself is gently undulating - nothing that will knacker you, but it's not a flat stroll either. Bring waterproofs. This is Wales; the ground gets boggy.

Free access and no set hours that I can find, which tells you something about its low-key character. It works brilliantly as a break in a caravan park stay - you're within easy driving distance of Gimblet Rock, Brook Cottage, and Llwyn Ffynnon if you're based in that cluster. Even Haven Hafan y Môr at five miles isn't a stretch. Go early if the weather looks promising, because the views open out across the peninsula and you'll want decent light.

Not for everyone, but if you actually like Wales rather than just visiting it, this is exactly the sort of place to spend a quiet hour or two.
