The walk from Penrhyn-coch down to Saint John's Church is half the appeal. You're threading through proper Welsh countryside - green, quiet, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The church itself is small, medieval, built from local stone with that particular grey-blue tint you get along this stretch of Ceredigion.

Inside, it's straightforward and honest - no fancy Victorian restoration here. The interior has the worn simplicity of a building that's been doing the same job for centuries. There's a real sense of time passing through these walls. The churchyard is lovely for a wander, with old gravestones tilted at odd angles.

If you're staying around Aberystwyth - and there are plenty of holiday parks within three to four miles, including Aber Bay Holiday Park and Clarach Bay Holiday Village - this is worth a detour if you're into local history and don't mind a bit of a ramble. It's not a destination in itself, mind you. Allow an hour including the walk and a proper look around. The real value is in combining it with a broader exploration of the quieter villages inland from Aberystwyth, away from the seafront bustle.

Admission appears to be free, as with most rural churches. Just be respectful if there's a service on. Go on a clear day when the light's decent - the stained glass rewards it.
