Eight Acre Wood

The woodland around Hastings gets surprisingly dense once you push past the seafront sprawl, and Eight Acre Wood is exactly the sort of place locals know about but visitors miss. It's a proper slice of Sussex forest - nothing manicured or visitor-centred, just mature trees, tangled undergrowth, and the kind of quiet you don't often find this close to the coast.

You're looking at a straightforward woodland walk here. The paths wind through beech and oak, muddy in winter, and the whole thing's small enough that you won't spend hours getting lost but large enough that it feels like an actual escape. Bring wellies after rain - the ground holds water. There's no visitor centre or facilities, which is either brilliant or annoying depending on your tolerance for roughness round the edges.

Families with kids who actually like trees will get something out of it, particularly younger ones keen on finding sticks and splashing through puddles. Serious walkers might find it a bit limited as a destination on its own, but it's useful for breaking up a longer ramble through the area. If you're based at Winchelsea Sands Holiday Park - only twenty minutes' drive away - it's worth a morning visit before heading back for lunch.

Go early on a weekday and you'll have the place to yourself. Late afternoon on a sunny weekend, less so. Free to access, no time limits. Allow forty minutes to an hour if you're taking it slowly.
