Guestling Wood

Walking into Guestling Wood feels like stepping into one of those corners of Sussex that hasn't made it onto the Instagram circuit yet. It's a proper woodland patch just outside Hastings, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The trees are dense enough to offer real shelter, and the paths wind through in a way that suggests someone's actually maintained them rather than just letting nature do whatever it wants.

This is walker territory, full stop. If you've got energetic kids who need burning out, brilliant. If you're after a gentle two-hour wander with decent shade and the chance to spot whatever wildlife hasn't bolted at the sound of footsteps, even better. History types might appreciate the fact that this patch of East Sussex has seen plenty over the centuries, though the wood itself doesn't come with a heritage label that I could find.

Access seems to be free, which is always a bonus. No entrance gates, no car park fees reported. The nearest town is Hastings, so you're within easy striking distance if you're staying at any of the holiday parks dotted around - Coghurst Hall is only just over two miles away, making Guestling Wood a decent morning outing before lunch. Winchelsea Sands and Beaulieu Farm are equally close if you're based further along the coast.

Allow a couple of hours if you're in no rush. It's not a destination that'll keep you occupied all day, but it's exactly the sort of spot you'd want to know about when the weather turns decent and you fancy getting out from the caravan without traveling far.
