Eleanor Cross

This is the Eleanor Cross, a reconstruction of one of twelve monuments Edward I commissioned after his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine died in 1290. The original stood here for centuries before it was destroyed during the English Civil War, and what you see today was rebuilt in the 1830s as a Victorian interpretation of that lost medieval structure.

It's a quick stop rather than a full afternoon outing - fifteen minutes to walk around it, take a photo, and read the plaques explaining the history. History enthusiasts will appreciate the connection to medieval royalty and the story of how these crosses dotted the route of Eleanor's funeral procession.
