Eleven Acre Wood

The woodland floor here is thick with leaf litter and moss - proper squelchy underfoot after rain, which most people either love or find annoying. Eleven Acre Wood sits just outside Hailsham and doesn't announce itself with grand gates or visitor facilities. It's simply a stretch of working forest where you can wander the rides between the trees without bumping into crowds.

What you get is straightforward: paths through mixed woodland, the occasional clearing, and the kind of quiet you don't find near housing estates. The canopy closes in nicely in summer. In autumn it's golden and brown. It's the sort of place where you'll spot the odd muntjac deer if you're lucky, and honestly, you might walk the whole thing in forty minutes if you're not dawdling.

Walkers will appreciate it more than most. It won't blow your mind - there's no dramatic landscape or historical ruined abbey - but if you're staying at Warren Wood Country Park six miles away and fancy a morning stomp before breakfast, this does the job. Children aged six upwards will enjoy it, though there's nothing specific to keep younger kids entertained beyond running about. The tracks are uneven in places, so proper footwear matters.

Free access appears standard for these spaces, though confirmation with the local council never goes amiss. The best time is early morning, when the light filters through better and you've got a fighting chance of spotting wildlife.
